Contractors: Stronger safety measures, more driver caution needed in highway work zones

They are zones where margins of error can be mere footsteps.

For construction workers in Alabama's highway work zones -- often just a row of cones or barrels away from constant traffic -- the work is becoming more dangerous and it is time for stronger enforcement of safety regulations and greater driver awareness, some contractors say.

In 2013, more than 1,900 highway work zone crashes in Alabama killed 18 people and injured about 700 others, state data show.
